More Day 13Inuvik, NWT8/22/97Martha and Philip did make their flight, and we're now on our way back down the Dempster. Before leaving, Phil and I paid another visit to the driving range while Scott and Martha got the Rover cleaned and ready for the long trip home. I must say that Philip has certainly made an impression with R.J. and his friend, Robert Kirk. In addition to swapping addresses, Robert gave him a season membership to the range. (Actually, I'm the one who could use it, considering how poorly I swung today; good thing I got all those games in before I left.) After stopping by the Ft. McPherson Co-Op and collecting our gear from Ken and Kathy (and thanking them over and over for their help), we headed back across the lonely tundra. Thanks to a few days of drying out, the road is in good shape. Interestingly, the only thing marking the site of our mishap was some mashed tundra grass and a small "SLIPPERY WHEN WET" sign. A little too late for us, and probably only a temporary fixture as there's a big music festival nearby this weekend. Stranage that as we drove by, there were lots of tents set-up, but no cars or people. It sure didn't look like another Heaven's Gate gig, but ya never know. |
