Day 15

Ft. Nelson, BC

8/24/97

This was nature day as we made it out of the Yukon and into British Columbia. Our spotting list includes mountain goats, caribou, moose, and heaven knows how many birds. Scott got a great shot of some caribou nibbling beside the highway framed by a rainbow I was ready to see Michael Eisner step out from behind a bush and cuss us out for ruining a test of their new theme park, "Disney's Canada" (complete with the Bob & Doug McKenzie beer garden, bear baiting arena, and the English vs. Francophone pie fight).

While we didn't see any bears, they are apparently still a problem at Liard Hot Springs. The park is open, but there seem to be more gawkers there than actual tourists. We bought gas across the street at the Fur Spider Crossing Garage, a latter day low-tech garage/campground/store/whatever run by latter day hippies. The front of the garage is decorated with hubcaps, deer and moose antlers, old tools, and a collection of bear-shredded memorabilia. (Also a pair of sandals left by a 68-yr-old man who left his wife in Quebec and hitchhiked his way out here before taking a tour bus the rest of the way to the Yukon. Something for me to think about in a few decades.)
